Smack Mellon is interested in proposals that consider the unusual architecture of the gallery space and encourage site-specific projects. These proposals can be considered for any show at Smack Mellon. If you are applying with a site-specific project, and also applying as an Emerging or Mid-Career Artist, please make sure to mark that category along with Site-Specific Proposal on your package so you are considered for both categories. Deadline is rolling.
These proposals should contain the following:
1. 10 to 20 Prints or JPGS
All prints must be labeled with your name, title, medium, date and dimensions. Please mark each one and number them corresponding to an image list. All JPGS should be 72 dpi and no larger than 7″ in either direction. Disk should be labeled with your name. Please number each JPG file to correspond to the image list.
DVD format video segment should be no longer than 5 minutes and cued to the appropriate segment for panel to view. Only moving images, ie. time based media, video art or documentation of performance art, should be submitted on DVD. For DVD pieces containing several pieces, please make each piece a chapter on the DVD for easier viewing.
If you must submit images of still artwork digitally, please save them as jpgs only, no bigger than 7 inches on any side at 72 dpi. But we strongly encourage sending hardcopy print outs over this option for easier viewing.
For Prints and JPGS: The numbers on the image list should correspond with the numbers marked on the print or JPG. Include the title, date, medium, dimensions, and a brief description of the work (less than 50 words for each slide).
For Video: Include title, date, and a brief description of the work (less than 250 words).
Please include your name, address, phone number and email address along with exhibition and educational background.
4. GENERAL ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Artists may also include an artist’s statement detailing more about a specific project or their work overall. This should be no longer than 1 page.
With sufficient postage for the return of your materials. Drop offs are welcome but pick ups are not so all packages must include a SASE. Material sent without an SASE will not be returned. Please send all materials by US Mail only. Do not send packages larger than 15″ x 22″.
6. PROJECT STATEMENT with a description of the work and an explanation of the idea and how the work relates to the space.
7. A DRAWING of the proposed project.
Artists involved in exhibitions are responsible for the execution and installation of their own artwork. Artists should understand that they are responsible for delivering their work to the gallery, installing and de-installing their work. Smack Mellon does not have a full time staff of preparators. Smack Mellon staff can assist in installation of work requiring a bucket lift or special mounting, when arranged in advance. Our part time staff may also assist artists and curators with installation of other complicated projects but will not be involved in helping the artist to build their work on site.
Specifics about the installation of artwork, the equipment and resources that Smack Mellon is able to provide will be discussed after the initial proposal has been reviewed and accepted as a proposal under consideration.
